ADVICE: How can I get revenge on my mom?

My mother and I had a huge argument and she took the lock off of my bedroom as punishment. How can I get revenge on her for doing that?

I’m worried that you want to get revenge on your mom. Whatever you do…do NOT take revenge on her (or anyone who pisses you off, for that matter). Revenge solves absolutely NOTHING and only makes things worse.

I get that you’re angry. (Rightfully so.) I know that you value your privacy. It sucks not having a way to lock your room. But what are the reason(s) she removed the lock from your door? What did you do and/or say that made her lose trust in you?

As much as you hate what she’s done, YOU NEED HER. She keeps a roof over your head, food in your belly, clothes on your back—she's keeping you alive.

She took the lock off to teach you two important life lessons: 1) there are consequences to your behaviors; and 2) privacy is a privilege, and not a right. She didn’t do this just to make your life miserable…most likely she’s trying to shape you into a more responsible young adult who will get along well in the world when you move out on your own. That’s her JOB.

Instead of plotting revenge, you should be doing everything you can to show her that you can be trusted again and deserve to have your privacy back. Ask her what it will take to get the lock put back on your door. Then do it. And do it for as long as it takes. If you follow this advice and change your behavior, two things will happen: 1) your mom will begin to trust you again and get off your back, and 2) she’ll reinstall the lock. Win-win.

Let me repeat myself…DO NOT seek revenge. It will absolutely make things worse for you (including—if it gets out of hand—the possibility of getting in trouble with the police), and you’ll never regain her trust, which is worth a heck of a lot more than the lock on your door.

If you find you can’t get over the anger you feel, please talk with a school counselor to sort it out, and develop a “trust recovery plan” to get back on your mom's good side.
